Fraser larges it with Enfield
Like Kate Winslet before her, Laura
Fraser, 24, is one of those rare British actresses who
has lent her considerable talents - and conspicuous
penchant for perfect accents - almost exclusively to the
silver screen rather than the box.
Some 15 features starring opposite the likes of Isabella
Rossellini, Leonardo DiCaprio and Anthony Hopkins (in the
upcoming Titus - 'Five months solid in Rome which was
great, but the film really took its toll on the whole
cast, including myself as I get raped early on and then
have my tongue cut out') have tested her 'luvvie'
quotient to the full, but thankfully her feisty Glasgow
charm remains intact. Fraser knows that the publicity
game must be played however, and in the past she has been
almost scathingly self-critical of her own performances.
'I'm only proud of one film I've made, Divorcing Jack,'
she says. She hasn't even watched The Man In The Iron
Mask, in which she played the highly prized Girl In Bed
With Leo role: 'I've seen my bit, that's enough!'
After Rome, Fraser spent three weeks in Ibiza shooting
Harry Enfield's cherry-taking girlfriend in the big
screen adaptation of Kevin and Perry. 'We were so drunk
at the airport in Ibiza that everyone was going round on
the baggage conveyor belts,' laughs Fraser. She's now
back at her new home in Kilburn for a well-earned break -
'Just so I could see my friends and sit around reading
books on philosophy for kids - it's easier to learn
things when you read children's books. I love reading
fairy-tales too, but not the brothers Grimm because
they're anti-women.'
The house of Fraser also received a complete
Laura-does-Changing-Rooms makeover and she's glad that
neighbouring Notting Hill is just somewhere to bump into
semi-celebs rather than live. 'It's where people pop out
to buy a pint of milk and come back a week later with
handfuls of business cards. Aaarghhh! I can't handle all
that falseness. I'm off to Prague in May for three months
to film The Knight's Tale in which I play a 14th-century
blacksmith. Sometimes I forget how much I really love it.
And I'm raring to start acting again.'
